The No. 1 City Gate Site of Taojiazui is located at a narrow pass of the mountain ridge on top of the slope and lying at an east-west orientation. By taking advantage of the mountainous terrain, it is built on a square platform with rounded corners surrounded by stone walls. The layout is slightly in the shape of a "凸" character, consisting of outer gateways, inner gateways, walls in the shape of character "八", step walkways, and drainage ditches. Square stone bricks are installed on the walls of inner gateways, and a large pile of big stones have been found inside the city gate. According to archaeological research, this city gate has three distinct characteristics compared with the excavated city gates in the mountain city systems from Song and Yuan dynasties. Firstly, it is structurally intact and fully equipped, with the largest scale and best preservation. Secondly, its construction style is unique—the inner gateway features a forked pillar structure while the outer gateway adopts an arch roof structure. This precious example represents a transitional phase for the city gate from forked pillar gates to arch roof structure in ancient China. Lastly, within the city gate, there are three layers of stone block walls and buried stone piles which vividly reflect the history of city destruction during the early Yuan dynasty.
